Mae Shi & Sparklehorse - mp3 review

The Mae Shi tracks are from a split with ‘rapider than horsepower’. They used to be on 5RC, but I’m not sure what they are doing now. They sound kind of like Les Savvy Fav meets Deerhoof to me. I fucking fell in love with the track ‘The Bear’. I know, I know last year was the year of the wolf, this is the year of the bear. Any bets on next year, my vote goes for the chicken. ‘Chicken Mother Parade’ is going to be the Clap Your Hands of ‘07, just like Clap Your Hands was the Arcade Fire of ‘06, just like Arcade Fire was the…..ok you get the picture.

I used to be mad into Sparklehorse, and I still like it. Ok, the opening riff of the first track is a kind of a dear prudence rip, but the rest of the track is awesome. They also have this crispness to the production, kind of brittle, lo-fi, crackly thing (notice I didn’t say sparkle) going on that I love. Andy called me a pussy for asking for this promo, this coming from the guy with Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears on his ipod. BTW, he’s on the list now so give him some shit about it, he fucking loves that crap. Andy, welcome to the list, bitch.

  1. that singer sounds like he’s getting fucked by a bear.

    The sparklehorse sounds real poppy, even more than good morning spider.

  2. Hello all,

    I feel an introduction is more than in order, being the new guy and all. So, HI!

    Mark- good choice in bands and songs. While I feel safe in saying that neither one is necessarily life changing, but they are good. The Mae Shi are a lot of fun.

    And let me clarify about the “pussy” comment to Mark. I work with Mark and we are good friends. And I am under the impression that everyone here is a friend of Mark’s as well. So when I made that comment it was definitely directed more at Mark personally, then the music he was asking me for. So I hope I didn’t offend any super Sparklehorse fans out there.

    I’m am too new to the group to be insulting any of you………just yet.

  3. ok, so i really like the sparklehorse tracks…i guess that makes me a pussy, but i have one, so i was already a member of that club. anyway, i really like don’t take my sunshine away (it reminds me of an updated beatles sound, and you know i love the beatles).

    the mae shi is a welcome addition to my library…great beats, raw sound…i love it. potential is cool, but the keyboard notes that start the song off remind me of some 80’s song or maybe law and order…can’t quite pinpoint it…anyway, mark the bear is a good one too, but my favorite has to be massively overwrought.

    asses dave’s mom kicks: 3 out of 4 for both

    and andy, welcome to the list.

  4. the mae shi - i really like how fresh most of this feels. it reminds of me of what i liked about the unicorns big record. boys being smart ass punky boys.

    the production choices are cool. i like the use of what one could say is lo-fi analog production with obvious “in the box techniques” for digital manipulation.

    my only complaint is the vocals could be a little emo-ish. the yelping and repeats of a defining phrase of an emotional statement like “my confessions, these are” make me cringe for myself because i kinda like them. then again, i loved the first few get up kids ep’s back in the day when emo-ish rock wasn’t considered so god damn lame.

    can’t get to sparkle horse right now. clients are coming soon so i need to get the studio together, and by that i mean eat as much of their cheese and fruit platters as possible once they enter the session.

  5. ::: Mae Shi :::
    There should be a T at the end of their name….god Damn….its good to see Jessie Camp from early 2000 MTV is still making music…I mean seriously people…these are some sort of joke tracks your sending me right….the first track, “the Potential” is the exact noise that’s in my head while throwing up in a public restroom on the side of the turnpike after 17 LITea’s, an eight ball of coke and just one shandie (that’s just a jab at Marks crappy ass drink)….upon listening to this a second time I just reenacted the final scene to Pi and put a drill through my skull.
