Started to write about how it was wierd that I couldn’t sleep last night after being up for over 48 hours straight. Then started to write about how Nicole and I saw this dude get thrown down on the street and beaten by plain clothes cops yesterday. Then I was going to bitch about work. Then I was going to talk about the show that I played at FIT today with Jon at lunch (wierd right). Then I realized how late it was so I decided I was just going write about what I was going to write about. and that’s pretty much it.
how about a quote though:
Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination.
So I’m giving you guys the scoop on Pitchfork. They are apparently going to post their review of this record on Monday. I’m actually not a big Hold Steady fan, but I like their last record ok. I like the music much more than Craig Finn’s (ex Lifter Puller) vocals, dudes voice and vocal style wears on me a bit. These guys used to be on FrenchKiss, but the new record is coming out on Vagrant.

Ok, this was just on Gorilla vs Bear, but holly shit it had me on the floor laughing. I had to send it out just in case any of you missed it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gx-NLPH8JeM&eurl. After laughing my ass off watching it I scroll down to read the comments and found this jem “watch the insanely niggerish guy in the back with the blue shirt and a mullet try to dance.” Dude, some people are fucked up! Had me rolling for another 10 minutes though. Ok, I got absolutely zero sleep last night so that is all my brain will allow me write today.
These tracks come from an anonymous sender on the list. Temp is a singer-songwriter/DJ combo. The two guys in the band met at UCLA a few years ago. They have since settled in Brooklyn and are currently working recording tracks for another release. These tracks are from their first EP ‘C’est la vie’.

Most of you guys know this but, Matt, Dan and I used to be in a band together back around the time that the wheel was invented. What came out of that experience were a) many boxes of CDs that still line my apartments hall ways; b) a plethora of inside jokes that aren’t really funny. One of those inside jokes was that Matt and I would constantly tell Dan that he was reactionary after he went off on a tangent (see, told you it wasn’t funny). So after reading his review yesterday I thought I would be funny to reply to him and Matt with “You’re so reactionary, Dan”. I was in a hurry so I let outlook do that stupid auto fill-in thing for me with the email addresses. The problem was that my bosses name also happens to be Matt so the auto complete put his email address in the to line instead of Matt B.’s. Before I could correct this I hit send and off it went. I get a reply within a few minutes from “Matt”, it reads “was I suppose to be on this. My good friend just signed this band to his major-ish label.” The main problems with this situation are:
1. My boss doesn’t know I use Insound servers to host the mp3s from this list.
2. Many of these said mp3s are not suppose to be on public servers.
3. My boss read my friends not so pleasant review of the band that his “good friend” just signed to his label.
Is anyone keeping track of the number emails about me making a complete fool of myself? Oh wait, its pretty much all of em, right?
Last year Matador put out 2 career-spanning comps of these guys to celebrate their 20th year as recording artists, so when this record came out I was kind of Yo La Tengo’d out and wasn’t too excited about it. It has since grown on me, but I don’t think I’ll ever be a ‘real’ Yo La Tengo fan at heart. ‘Im Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass” has to be one of my all time favorite album titles though.

Got to hang out with my friend Dave for a bit this weekend. The thing about Dave is that even if you just met him, after about 10 minutes with him you will find your self talking about the strangest things. Dave’s the type of guy who is brutally honest, with himself and others, and will talk about anything. Case in point, Dave, his girlfriend, and I walk out to smoke a cigarette and Dave just says, “I was walking home past a sleeping homeless guy the other night and thought, hmmm I could just kill this guy and keep walking and no one would ever know”. So now we are talking about how easy it would be to kill homeless people on the street and never get caught. This moved into a conversation about ’The Dart Man’, who was a guy in the early 90’s that provoked a miniwave of terror on women in the city by shooting them in the ass with homemade darts. Not just one or two, this guy hit 53 women. At the time we had thought that the guy had never been caught, but sadly I found this quote online from a 1990 issue of TIME Magazine, ‘After a massive manhunt, police announced last week that they had finally collared Dart Man’. Seriously, “massive manhunt”, fucking hilarious. This is when Andy and Joe join the conversation and someone (prolly Joe) explored the idea of “The Muffin Man”. It was decided this character would HAVE to have a costume, and would basically sneak up and grab “muffin tops”. If you don’t know what “muffin tops” are Joe and Andy have an uncanny knowledge of cute nicknames for awkward body features and are always willing to share their knowledge.
If you read music blogs Cold War Kids will not be new to you. They were pretty much everywhere for a hot minute. I wanted to send some tracks from their upcoming release on Downtown Recording (this will be thier first full length) but I couldn’t wait for the promo so I’m sending some tracks from their 2 EPs released earlier this year. And anyway, from what the band says on their site some of these songs will actually be on the full length (hospital beds & hair down), although they’ve been re-recorded “in the way that we would’ve liked to originally record them”.

I’m in a selfish mood right now. This is def. not new, yeah its like 2 years old and prolly everyone on this list has heard this track but I’m sending it anyway. There’s no other way to put this other than saying that if everyone I know fucked me over and my whole world fell apart this song would get me through it.The name ‘…And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead’ apparently came from a Mayan chant and a similar Egyptian chant, however in an interview Conrad Keely pointed out that this, amongst some other “facts” about the band were lies.
http://www.r8e8r.com/mp3r/03%20Worlds%20Apart.mp3
Part of me wants to say that the reason I sent this was to get everyone psyched about the upcoming trail of dead record, but that would be a lie, and no one likes to be lied to.Promise I’ll have some cool new stuff next week.

I think I got a reverse drunk dial last night, but I’m not exactly sure. First, let me explain the reverse drunk dial. A drunk dial usually involves alcohol, a late night, and a disruption or disturbance in the form of a seemingly urgent phone call to the receiving party. Normally its the dialer that’s drunk and the receiver that gets the harassment. A reverse drunk dial is when its late, you are drunk, and someone calls you with an urgent phone call hoping that you’ll be sober enough to talk to them. In a reverse drunk dial its the caller that usually ends up being tormented. The best part of a reverse drunk dial is that the sober caller will instantly realize you are wasted and try to slip out of the conversation with a polite “I’ll call you tomorrow”. You of course will have no part of that and refuse to let them off the phone. Many times a reverse drunk dial ends in massive frustration, ultimately ending up being motivation for the drunk receiver to become the drunk dialer and return balance to the drunk dial matrix. Such was the case for me last night……I think. Much of my story comes to me from a 3rd party. What I remember of it involved vomiting on an east Williamsburg street corner, laying on a stoop, professing my love for said stoop, and then refusing to leave that stoop because I wanted “to live there”, all of this happening while I was on the phone. All players involved are actually on this list so feel free to fill in the blanks if you like, you know who you are.
This is another Theory 8 band from Nashville. Formed during the Fall of 2002. Current/former members of Iotushalo, Shiboleth, On Command, and Forget Cassettes. I love that they describe their sound as “Elvis Costello being manhandled by Hot Snakes.” I’m not super psyched about this band, but I really like the guitar and drum sounds and there are parts from each song that I think are interesting.

Another great example of me being an idiot. I had been planning to go to the Emily Haines show for a while. The plan was to harass Andy to harass her label to put me on the list. As most of you know, I like to procrastinate, why do today what you can put off till tomorrow. Problem is when your as dumb as I am and you take a Monday off from work you think Tuesday is Monday because its your first day back to work from the weekend. So all day yesterday I kept thinking the show was still one more day away until someone asked me I was going to the show “tonight”. At this point its too late to try to get on the list, but I figured she’s playing two shows, they can’t possibly both sell out, I’ll just go to the later show and buy a ticket at the door. Stayed late at work, drank some beers at the office, met Trevor for a few drinks at flip night, and headed over to Joe’s Pub for the show. We get there right at 11:30, perfect timing, walk up to get tickets, no line, awesome right? Well, turns out there’s no line because the show is sold out. What else was left to do but go to scratcher and get wasted with Trevor and some weird drunk kid we met outside that worked at MTV.
Sending this because all you hard core indie bitches know you want it. Sending the whole album, cuz that’s the only way to roll with this one. You know you’re going to buy it anyway.

So I stayed home from work yesterday, pretty much sat on my couch and worked on my laptop all day. I did get some good reading time in between emails and IMs which was nice. Around 5pm I started getting a little hungry, at this point I had been on the couch for prolly at least 3 hours straight. At the height of my laziness I figured I’d just order pizza. Lets keep in mind a) I live in NY which is basically the pizza capital of the US; b) There are like 5 pizza places less than 2 blocks from my house; c) there’s a pizza place literally across the street from my house, I can see it from my window. Instead of getting off my ass and getting out of my house to pick up a nice NY slice I decide to order it. Not only that, but I’m going to go a step further. I’m not even going to get off the couch or put my laptop down. I decide to order from Dominos, the worst pizza on the face of the earth, because I can order it online. I’m not even going to put enough energy in to even pick up the fucking phone. Efficiency is intelligent laziness.
Epsilons got their start in Laguna Beach, CA, where they played house parties throughout their high-school years, before finding their way to L.A., where they performed regularly at all-ages (these guys are all right out of high school) venue The Smell. The club liked the band so much that it released a split 7″ featuring Epsilons and Hips on the its own Olfactory label. These tracks are from their debut release on Retard Disco.

I had an awesome weekend filled with lots of free grey goose vodka, dancing, bright yellow paint, redskins, and of course whiskey. While I was walking up Ave. A yesterday I walked past this dorky looking guy wearing a rediculous yellow hat and carrying a hockey stick. I thought he looked familiar so I turned around and looked back, he noticed and kinda turned away. We ended up walking next to each other for a few blocks and I realized that he kinda looked like Mike Meyers. I was building up the nerve to ask him and I thought how lame it would be to bother the dude. You could tell by his stupid yellow hat that he was trying to stay incognito. But I was starting to think that maybe it wasn’t him, I am so bad at spotting celebrities, I didnt even reccognize Borat when Matt and I met him. But right as I thought that some guy walked up to him all giddy and shit and was “Hey, your Mike Meyers! What the hell are you doing here?” After seeing the way he reacted I was glad I didnt say anything to him. Sarah W. can actually “one-up” my Mike Meyers story if she cares to share it with the group. Sarah?
I’m sending this from home again today so my mp3 resources are limited. Andy actually did the uploads for me (thanks).
¡Forward, Russia! got together in early 2004in Leeds, England - Tom Woodhead (vocals/synth), Rob Canning (bass), Katie Nicholls (drums), and Whiskas (guitar). Katie is Whiskas sister, and Tom and Rob were in The Black Helicopters. They also started there own label ‘Dance to the Radio’ that same year, however Mute has released this album here in the US.
