Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? - mp3 review

December 6th, 2006 r8e8rcom

Sorry I didn’t send anything out yesterday.  Got stuck at our data center working on our search server all day.  Fun right?  So, I had this dinner party at my house last night, and while I was cooking I realized I had to buy some of that Morningstar veggie meat stuff that comes in a bag (crumbles?).  I usually order it from freshdirect (you guys know how lazy I am, if I can get that shit delivered I will), but I needed it like that day so I had to find a grocery store in my area that sold it.  My neighborhood doesn’t have any stores you would recognize unless you lived in Kensington (Silver Rod, Food Town, Red Farm, Globo [something in polish] Market, ok you get the picture).  So I ended up grabbing my skateboard and heading down McDonald Ave.  I eventually found a ShopRite which was like 3 subway stops down on the F from me.  I was on cloud 9.  Its like a REAL grocery store.  They actually sell name brand products.  There’s more than 2 registers.  The cashiers actually spoke english.  I have a new found love for my neighborhood.  Maybe love’s not the right word, maybe its tolerance.

This is straight from last.fm (links and all) cuz I’m lazy today.

Of Montreal were among the second wave of groups to emerge from the Elephant Six Collective. The group is typical of many Elephant Six bands due to its interests in combining musical experimentation and the basic tenets of pop (ie. catchy melodies and sing along choruses). Created by Kevin Barnes after a failed romance with a woman from Montreal, the band’s style has been influenced by not only more conventional and , but, on their earlier releases, and , before moving on to a style that was far more influenced by on their most recent albums. Based in Athens, Georgia, USA.

Matt & Kim - S/T - mp3 review

December 4th, 2006 r8e8rcom

I walked past these two jewish girls on the platform of the J train the other day.  One of them looked me right in the eye for a few seconds and then turned to her friend and said, “You see how mushugina these people are.”  First of all, what the hell does mushugina mean, and second why the hell did she say that after looking at me?  After spending the rest of my weekend wondering if I was a mushugina I finally broke down and asked my friend what mushugina meant and he was keen enough to point out how much funnier the whole thing was due to the fact that it happened on the J train.  Totally ridiculous.

Matt & Kim are a power pop duo based out of Brooklyn, New York. Made up of Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino.  They went on tour with Meneguar earlier this year.  These tracks are from their self-title release on iHEARTCOMIX records  If you like these tracks go here to check out their video:  http://www.mattandkimmusic.com/.  These guys were also featured in the latest edition of 411 (really cool skateboarding DVD ‘magazine’).

Nathan Fake - Drowning in a Sea of Love - mp3 review

December 1st, 2006 r8e8rcom

I went to see Chin Up Chin Up last night at R&R.  R&R kind of sucks ass as a venue, but it was cool to see them in such a small room.  They sounded amazing.  I hadn’t seen them since CMJ two years ago.  Andy and Joe were DJ’ing between the bands and after the show.  The last time they DJ’ed an R&R show I went out and got a shitload of SPARKS and snuck them in after finding out that a jack on the rocks costs $9.  Tried to repeat this stunt again, but no one wanted any SPARKS so now I’m stuck with a bag full of SPARKS.  If anyone is going to ‘The Creature’ party tonight at Midway (and you should) please take a SPARKS off of me.  I don’t want that shit.

Nathan Fake (his real name) was born and brought up in Norfolk, England. He has been playing and writing music since he was a young teenager.   He is not a DJ, never has been and probably never will be.  These track are from his debut release “Drowning in a Sea of Love” on Border Community.
