Love Of Diagrams - Love Of Diagrams EP - mp3 review

January 31st, 2007 r8e8rcom

I had this strange dream this morning.  Actually, I don’t really remember what the dream was about, but I know that I kept having the same dream and I’d wake up at the same moment each time.  When I woke up, still in that nebulous wake-sleep state, I started talking to my subconscious like it was another person inside of me.  I felt like it kept trying to remind of something that I already knew.  I was getting pissed and I was yelling, “I know, stop reminding me.  Go away.”  I felt like we were fighting for conscious attention.  When I finally got out of bed I realized how crazy this seemed and I thought what if this was the beginning of a multiple person disorder or some other mental disorder.  What if people knew they were eventually going to go off their rocker, actually felt themselves going crazy before they lost it.  I saw myself 10 years from now on some street in some city bitin’ my boy Sinceres style, “Lets go have a pint.  You know I’m fucking crazy right?”

Love Of Diagrams is a three-piece from Melbourne, Australia. they were the first Australian band to be signed to matador records.  I think the release date for this record is today, but they also had an EP on the Unstable Ape label.  I think these track were produced by Bob Weston (Shellac, Mission Of Burma).

btw yes, I did just not so subtly reference one of my songs, but matt wrote the lyrics and it was appropriate, right?

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible - mp3 review

January 30th, 2007 r8e8rcom

I saw this kid on the F train the other night sitting across from me.  He was sitting across two seats leaning over anxiously looking out the window as the doors closed.  He sat with his toes touching ground, his heels in the air ready to spring forward and jump off the train at any minute.  As the train pulled into the tunnel and the windows turned black he turned his and stared blankly at the subway map behind his head.  Not moving at all, just staring until the train came to the next stop.  As the train pulled into the station he anxiously looked out the door, again not moving, just staring.  As it pulled away again he just turned back to the map and stared again.  He did this for the next three stops and it started to annoy me for some reason.  What the hell was he expecting to find on that map that he didn’t see the last three times he stared at it.  Finally he stood up at the fourth stop stuck his head out of the doors and looked back and forth a few times and then cautiously stepped onto the platform.  I realized that the whole time I was watching him that our F train was running on the A line and he was prolly just lost.  I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me earlier or why I didn’t once think to ask him if he needed directions.  I simply sat across from him describing his strange behavior in my journal.  I’m such an asshole voyeur sometimes.

yay, the new arcade fire!  I know you guys were all waiting for this, right?  anyway, here it is, and remember you didn’t get it from me, right.

Arrah And The Ferns - Evan Is A Vegan - mp3 review

January 29th, 2007 r8e8rcom

Another lethargic, nebulous weekend for me.  I attempted to commit myself to the arduous task of subjugating my capricious nature.  Sadly, once again my tenuous convictions to adhere to a regular daily routine lay in ruin giving way to complacency.  I did however read a good portion of a vocabulary building book.  So now you can see how many times I misused my new vocabulary.  ???????? ?????? ?? ???????? ??????

More female fronted cutesy indie pop for ya.  Can you say matt and kim, or maybe mates of state, eh?  I don’t care, I like it all.  These tracks are from thier debut release on Standard Recording Co.   Junxt came out in July of 06, but whatevs.  Promise I’ll stop sending this kind of stuff after this.

Damiera - M(US)IC - mp3 review

January 24th, 2007 r8e8rcom

Went to the modular records party last night and got a little too drunk.  I seriously didn’t plan to do that.  I originally only wanted to stay for an hour or so.  I don’t know if I did or said anything dumb at the party, but chances are pretty good considering I woke up this morning and didn’t know why I was sleeping on Trevor’s floor or how I’d gotten there.  I didn’t remember buying or eating the sandwich that I obviously did, leaving the paper wrapping stretched across Trevor’s table.  Amazingly, I woke up on time this morning, felt great, and actually got into work early (well early for me).

Damiera are from Buffalo, NY.  Equal Vision Records  re-released their self-released debut M(US)IC on 1/23/07.  Tell me this doesn’t sound like an equal vision band.  I don’t know how the manage to find so many bands that sound the same.  Yeah, its get old and its predictable, but sometimes I just get in that mood and wanna hear it.

Ohbijou - Swift Feet For Troubling Times - mp3 review

January 23rd, 2007 r8e8rcom

I was walking down 17th street to get a sandwich today and I walked past a shopping cart.  I just thought it was some homeless persons cart.  As I past it I saw something moving in the cart out of the corner of my eye.  My first thought was “oh my god, there’s a baby in that cart”.  Then I looked again and saw that if it was a baby it was a really hairy baby.  Maybe it was some kind of mutated dwarf or something.  I had the feeling that I was in a lucid dream and I thought how pissed I would be if indeed I was in a dream and had to wake up to realize that the 4 hours I spent at work already didn’t really count because I was dreaming them.  But it turned out to be a dog wearing a sweater in the cart and I wasn’t dreaming, so its all good.

Toronto kids.  ohbijou started off as Casey Mecija writing in singing songs. These tracks are from their debut release ‘Swift Feet For Troubling Times’.  I think Mike Olsen (Hidden Cameras) may have produced this record.

Kiss Kiss - Reality Vs. The Optimist - mp3 review

January 18th, 2007 r8e8rcom

I bought the same camera model that got stolen again yesterday.  Felt so stupid doing it.  The sales guy was trying to sell me on it, explaining the features and shit, and I was like, “yeah I know, I had one already.”  Just makes me feel even more stupid about the whole thing.  But I’m glad to have a camera again, guess I need to be more careful with this one.

I’m not usually a fan of the ‘genre’ + violin usually, you know ”it’s like rock with a violin”, or “it’s punk with a violin”.  Like adding a violin automatically gives you some kind of originally points or some shit.  And while kiss kiss was described to me as dark pop with a violin I thought I’d check it out anyway cuz I’ve heard good things about them.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Some Loud Thunder - mp3 review

January 17th, 2007 r8e8rcom

sorry for the lapse in emails the past few days.  It’s been pretty hectic at Insound with the Clap Your Hand Say Yeah hoopla going on.  Did any of guys pre-order that shit from us?

So, I’ve had a few rough days lately.  The other night my camera was stolen by some fuck on the chinatown bus.  Not only did a lose a $400 camera, but I lost some really cool pictures from DC.  Work has been hell because the clap your hands promotion turned into a mess and their manager and my boss were freaking out because bloggers were bitching about us all over the web yesterday.  I know I sound like a whiny bitch right now, but I don’t care that shit sucks.  I really need a whiskey right now.  Anyone wanna grab a drink with me after work?

Since I’ve spent so much time talking about the band I guess I’ll send some of the new album out.  Predictable, I know.  I’m not going to say anything about cyhsy expect that I really don’t understand all the hype.  Not bad, but certainly not great either, just my humble opinion.  I know that you can listen to the whole album on myspace, but I thought I’d send it out anyway incase any of you guys wanted downloads.  Plus I’m lazy.

Small Sails - Similar Anniversaries - mp3 review

January 10th, 2007 r8e8rcom

I’m going to DC this weekend so I’m sure I’ll have some good china town bus stories for you when I get back.  If any of you DC kids want to hang this weekend give me a call.  If you don’t I’ll prolly end up drunk dialing you sometime after 2 AM anyway, so you might as well just do it.

Small Sails (formerly adelaide) is another band on the “Other Electricities” label, also from Portland, OR.   The group formed in the summer of 2003, and their debut album was released in August of 2004 (under the name adelaide).  Apparently these guys mix 16mm film loops into their live show, they describe their shows as a “glowing multimedia experience that captivates viewers and listeners alike”.   Again this is very M83-ish, a little six part seven-ee, a tiny bit DNTEL maybe?  I apologize for sending ambient indie pop two days in a row, but the guy at Other Electricites sent this to us with the Jatun stuff and I really liked it and thought you guys would too.

Jatun - Jatun - mp3 review

January 9th, 2007 r8e8rcom

I have this re-occurring theme in many of my dreams since I was maybe four or five.  The basic theme starts out with me being perused by a villain of some kind.  Usually its a some kind of animal, like a bear or a wolf or something.  What always seems to happen though is that I end up conquering my fear of whatever it is that’s perusing me and fighting back until I realize that its my father in disguise that’s been chasing me the whole time.  At which point he usually ends up cowering in defeat and apologizing for scaring me.  Every time I have it I come up with a different meaning for it.  I wake up and apply some meaning that happens to coincide with whatever is going on in my life at that time, but yet I continue to have the same dream.

Sorry, I didn’t really have anything else to write about today.   Feel free to offer an analysis if you like though.

This is some mellow M83 type shit, but its good.  I know absolutely nothing about this guy/band? so I grabbed this from their site.

Jatun is Alan Grosvenor (guitar, keys, bass, loops) and Scott Worley (vocals, keys, guitar, laptop). Alan and Scott met in Portland, OR circa ‘04, and started writing the songs that would slowly form into the mish-mash of cables, circuits, ivory and alcohol known as “Jatun.”   The s/t debut album, “Jatun” will be released in March 2007 on the indie label, “Other Electricities”. The album was written, engineered, and mixed by Scott and Alan.

Marnie Stern - In Advance Of The Broken Arm - mp3 review

January 8th, 2007 r8e8rcom

Had a completely non productive weekend.  Went to element on Friday and spent $35 to dance for less than an hour and drink one jack on the rocks.  Then spent another $24 taking a cab home because I’m a lazy bitch. $59 (not including the $2 slice of ghetto pizza) and the only thing I have to speak of from that night is a few out of focus pictures of my friends dancing and this bitchy email.  Saturday quickly turned into a whiskey laden haze that ended in a smoke filled apartment in greenpoint at 7am.  Tried to spend the next day at my apartment watching greek movies.  I figured it’d be a good way to relax after a weekend of drinking and at least attempting to stimulate brain waves practicing my greek.  The plan backfired though as a feel asleep on my couch about 20 minutes into the first movie.

Marnie Stern is single handedly trying to make guitar tapping cool again.  The upper east side manhattanite says she was introduced to tapping watching a Don Caballero video.  Why’s everyone gotta be too cool for school, we all know EVH is the tapping king.  These tracks are from her upcoming debut release ‘In Advance Of The Broken Arm’ on Kill Rock Stars on 2/20/07.  Zack Hill (Hella) produced and played drums on this record for her.
