Deerhunter - Cryptograms - mp3 review
I saw 3 kids walking down 17th street today checking parked cars for open doors. They were trying to be discrete about it and not doing a very good job. Looking both ways before trying a door, but ignoring the handful of people walking by as they tried it anyway, then moving onto the next car. I thought about saying something to them but I was finished with my cigarette and didn’t really feel like bothering. I figured the way they were going they were about to get caught anyway. It reminded me of some of the stupid shit I did as a kid though. I almost got shot once doing the same thing in the neighborhood I grew up in. Me and a friend of mine were checking cars at like 1AM. We find this old beat looking toyota. My friend is diggin through the glove compartment with an unopened box of donuts he found on the front seat under one arm and he goes “oh shit!”. I look up and see a light go on in the house in front of us. A guy comes out pointing a revolver at us and yells “stay where you are, I’m a cop.” We immediately turn and start running as fast as we can, scared shitless, but laughing like crazy. Seriously, how funny is that, a cop ready to shoot some kids over a box of donuts.
I don’t know much about Deerhunter except that they are a 5 piece from Atlanta, Georgia. These tracks are from their upcoming release (1/29/07), Cryptograms, on Kranky. The album was recorded in 2 parts and there is an intended duality to it.
