I saw 3 kids walking down 17th street today checking parked cars for open doors. They were trying to be discrete about it and not doing a very good job. Looking both ways before trying a door, but ignoring the handful of people walking by as they tried it anyway, then moving onto the next car. I thought about saying something to them but I was finished with my cigarette and didn’t really feel like bothering. I figured the way they were going they were about to get caught anyway. It reminded me of some of the stupid shit I did as a kid though. I almost got shot once doing the same thing in the neighborhood I grew up in. Me and a friend of mine were checking cars at like 1AM. We find this old beat looking toyota. My friend is diggin through the glove compartment with an unopened box of donuts he found on the front seat under one arm and he goes “oh shit!”. I look up and see a light go on in the house in front of us. A guy comes out pointing a revolver at us and yells “stay where you are, I’m a cop.” We immediately turn and start running as fast as we can, scared shitless, but laughing like crazy. Seriously, how funny is that, a cop ready to shoot some kids over a box of donuts.
I don’t know much about Deerhunter except that they are a 5 piece from Atlanta, Georgia. These tracks are from their upcoming release (1/29/07), Cryptograms, on Kranky. The album was recorded in 2 parts and there is an intended duality to it.

Rhea and I went to Scratcher last night for a few drinks after seeing Children of Men. We’re standing outside smoking a cigarette and we both smell pot. We look over and there sitting on the steps we find J.T, an older (65) year old black man. He bends down to peak his head below the hand rail and stretches his arm out toward us, joint in hand, and says “You wanna hit?” We’re already a bit trashed at this point and I’m thinking about my tragic night the last time I smoked pot drunk, but Rhea immediately says “I’d would love one” and starts walking over to him. I figure what the fuck and take the joint when she passes it to me after taking a short hit. Our polite small talk with J.T. slowly turns into deep conversation about life, love, and the pursuit of happiness. It starts to get weird when J.T. starts talking about faith and the one true way to live. I’m anticipating the J word, anxious now to find a new stoop and linger in front of. We thank him for his generosity and quickly move on to another bar.
If you’ve been to an Oh My Rockness party lately or saw Detachment Kit you prolly saw these guys. If you’ve never been to NY chances are you prolly haven’t heard these guys, as far as I know these brooklynites they’ve never played outside of the NY area.

Couldn’t sleep for some reason last night. Laid in my bed staring at the ceiling. Every time I closed my eyes thoughts and ideas would race through my mind. After trying to read for a while, watching a movie, and trying to write I found myself dictating to my voice recorder until 5am. I basically told myself stories all night to fall asleep. I haven’t listened to it yet, but I think I got a few hours of myself snoring on there as well.
I totally slept on this band. Thanks to Andy and Trevor for diggin’ this one up again. This record came out in Jan. of 06. The Kooks are from Brighton, England. They consist of front-man Luke Pritchard, guitarist Hugh Harris, bassist Max Rafferty, and Paul Garred on the percussion, with their members aging from 19 to 21 years of age. Wait was that a flanger I heard? Trying to bring it back, eh?

Back at work after a busy holiday vacation. I know I originally said I would send those CDs as an ‘early’ christmas/hanukkah/kwanzaa/whatever present, but you guys know how I roll, early means 2 weeks after christmas so they are going out in the mail tomorrow. So I had to go to court before leaving for Nashville. Nothing makes you feel more like a loser than a day at court for urinating in public. I think they make the building look as dilapidated as possible just to make you feel even more like a loser. Everything just looks drab and depressing. Paint caked grey and white walls, yellow florescent lights that make everyone look dead, grey marble floors from the 60s, tiny cramped elevators. It felt like being in a giant principals office. No one tells you where to go or what to do and when you finally figure it out, after asking countless people and explaining that you’re there because you got caught pissing on the street, they make you wait and watch all the others losers go up to the judges bench and get fined. I decided the whole expirience was worse than the $50 fine I ended up having to pay.
jesu was formed in 2003 by Justin Broadrick following the breakup of Godflesh. Beginning initially as a one man project, the project included bassist Diarmuid Dalton and drummer Ted Parsons in late 2003. Their first release is the Heart Ache EP, with Broadrick playing all of the instruments. These tracks are from their upcoming release ‘Conqueror’ due out in Feb. 07 on Hydra Head records.
