LCD Soundsystem is the musical side project of producer James Murphy, co-founder of dance-punk label dfa Records. The music of LCD Soundsystem can also be described as a mix of dance music and punk, along with elements of disco and other styles. During live performances, Murphy is accompanied by Tyler Pope (!!!/Out Hud) on the bass, Phil Mossman on the guitar and percussion, Nancy Whang on the keyboard and Pat Mahoney on the drums. These tracks are from the latest release, ‘Sound Of Silver’. If you guys remember that snowman on the insound holiday calendar page that did the robot when you clicked on him, he danced to an LCD Soundsystem sample.

Mark bar stiffed me last night on my jack on the rocks. Couldn’t tell if I kept getting shit pours becuase the bar tender had something against me personally. Maybe he didnt like my haircut, maybe he didn’t like greek/asian kids, maybe I smelled bad? Maybe he was just stingy with the whiskey. Either way, it sucked, and I wasn’t happy. I was expecting more, especially from a place called Mark bar. Shit should have been redic. You order a jack on the rocks, they give you the bottle and a cup of ice, no wum’ sayin’?

I seriously didn’t feel like thinking about new music to send today. The new RJD2 sucks ass, I was hoping that Charlotte Gainsbourg’s release was going to be good because I kind of had a crush on her after seeing Science Of Sleep, but it sucks. I’m not really into or excited about anything. J-A-D-E-D. I was thinking about randomly picking some shit out of our junk promo box and sending that. There’s some serious shit in there, you know, the kind of crap that is so bad it actually becomes interesting. Its amazing to think that people actually spent time to make something so horrible, dated, and cheesy. You can’t get much worse than a promo by the band ‘Cheese’, titled ‘Enlarge Your Johnson’, with a picture of a cow on the cover. But no, you guys are gonna get something so much better. Old school Long Island post hardcore! You know, I thought all 90s era Long Island kids had an intimate knowledge of hardcore and indie rock until I heard fellow reviewer, Long Islander, who shall remain nameless, tell me that they didn’t know who Braid was and that they sounded like Dashboard Confessional after hearing them. Hope that doesn’t sound like Im giving them a hard time, there are tons of bands that I never appreciated until well after their demise. Just seemed like you Long Island kids had some kind of hardcore appreciation class somewhere between PE and Lunch.
Rival Schools were a short-lived Post Hardcore band from New York, formed by members from several influential 80’s and 90’s underground bands (including Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand, CIV, Youth of Today, Burn, Project X, Judge, Moondog, Warzone, Side by Side and Iceburn). The band started from the ashes of a short lived project, World’s Fastest Car which had Artie Shepard of Mind Over Matter and Bad Trip fame involved, but the project went no further than demos. Apparently Walter and Artie had a difference of opinions hence the split. Artie then started Errortype: 11. These tracks are from their one and only ‘real’ release, ‘United By Fate’.

I’m so motivated to put my entire life in order right now its stupid. I wanna put all the pieces of my life into tiny little manageable boxes with labels on the front and handling instructions inside. Then I want to file all the boxes in alphabetical order in a giant warehouse with shelves to the ceiling. Memories in aisle 1, dreams aisle 9, obsessions hidden in the back. Then I wanna index and tag that shit, make it searchable. You know like, gimme all items with the words “basset hound” in them, instantly I get every memory, dream, TV show, movie, every thought I’ve ever had that had anything to do with basset hounds. What the fuck am I talking about. This is so stupid. But, yo, check these ‘the photo’ imposter pics:

Remember when modest mouse was cool? Maybe they still are? You guys tell me. I would have sent this out earlier if Insound was cool enough to get major label promos, or I cared enough to look for it online.

Did you know that on this day in 1794 the cotton gin was patented by Eli Whitney? Well, did ya? So, Big Bang TV was pretty awesome last night, expect for that stupid screen saver. Come on guys, that shits so 1995. Change it. Now! While I’ve got your attention guys, just want to say that I think Scott should ditch the trombone, the turntables, and the guitars and become the official ‘laptop’ player. Sorry Keith, stole your joke. But seriously, take some time, think it over, I think it could work for you guys. What did you say? Whose that bad boy cryin’ on the dance floor? Its me at RAFIFI tonight!!!! Crying because ‘I LOVE THIS SONG’!! Seriously, lets go. Who’s down?
Papercuts is music by Jason Robert Quever with David Enos, Matt Stromberg, Alex Delanda, Shayde Sartin and various guest musicians. This record came out in February and I wanted to send some tracks out earlier but it slipped my attention until today. These tracks are from the album, ‘Can’t Go Back’, released on Gnomonsong.

A friend sent this out a few weeks ago and I just installed it on my itunes. Its one of the coolest things I’ve come across in a while. You can download a simple, small and easy plug-in that will read the artist on your iTunes and show you a calendar of when ANY AND ALL of them are playing shows in your city.

This is some mellow folky shit, but I think its pretty good. Lavender Diamond originally came to life in Bird Songs of the Bauharoque, a punk operetta inspired by the work of American painter/architect Paul Laffoley. Vocalist Becky Stark wrote and created the piece with a friend while living in Providence, RI, and starred as Lavender herself, a winsome part bird/part human who wants peace on earth. The indie stage show was such a hit at home that Stark and company went on to tour 56 cities across North America in 2003. Lavender Diamond issued The Cavalry of Light EP in 2005; a second release, a split 7″ with Queens of Sheeba for Cold Sweat, also appeared that year. A buzz around the blogosphere and indie mag elite began to take shape by early 2006, and performances at ArthurFest, South by Southwest, and the CMJ New Music Seminar only added fuel to the record label frenzy. In November 2006, while touring with the Decemberists, Lavender Diamond signed to Rough Trade in Europe and Matador in the U.S. These tracks are from the upcoming release, ‘Imagine Our Love’, due out on Matador sometime May.

Sorry I didn’t send anything out yesterday. My computer got this fucking virus that was sending out hundreds of spam emails all day. It basically took all day to reload the OS and software. That has to be the geekiest excuse ever. I should prolly get my ass kicked just for writing that. Anyway, almost everyone from insound is at SXSW so the insound office is pretty empty. I kind of wanted to go hang out this year, but its also nice to just sort of hang around and get some work done.
Dntel is the solo project of Jimmy Tamborello, known for mixing glitch and cut-up electronic techniques with instruments like acoustic guitars, accordions, and symphonies. Dntel released his first full-length album Life Is Full Of Possibilities in 2001. The LP featured vocal contributions by many artists, including Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard on the breakout track (This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan, which led to a single in 2002 and later, the formation of the band The Postal Service with Gibbard. These tracks are from his upcoming full length release ‘Dumb Luck’, which will be released on Sub Pop on 4/24. If you like this stuff or Postal Service def. check out ‘Life Is Full Of Possibilities’.

I had a lucid dream this weekend. First one I’ve had in years, but it was a very strange one because I didn’t actually do anything cool once I realized I was dreaming. I just kind of sat where I was a look at the scenery around me. It was a great feeling though. Also made homemade ravioli from scratch. Not sure if it was really any good though, my only other reference points were drunk and starving when they tried them. Had fun making them anyway.
My Brightest Diamond is Shara Worden, granddaughter of an Epiphone-playing traveling evangelist, fathered by a National Accordion Champion, and mothered by a classical organist. Having a family of wanderers who migrated across the US every few years, the landscape and the musical influences were constantly changing. Spanish tangos, Sunday morning gospel, classical and jazz were the accompaniment to her home life. Her first song was recorded at age three and by age eight she was studying piano and performing in community musical productions. In 2004, she began work on two records: one featuring songs accompanied by a string quartet titled “A Thousand Shark’s Teeth”, and a more standard rock album featuring a full band (featuring Earl Harvin on drums, Chris Bruce on bass, and, on one song, her father Keith on accordion) titled “Bring Me The Workhorse”, released to critical acclaim in August 2006 on Asthmatic Kitty Records.
These tracks are from her upcoming release ‘Tear It Down’, which was release on 3/6/07 on Asthmatic Kitty. Its a remix of the tracks from ‘Bring Me the Workhorse’. I thought it’d be cool to include both the original versions from that record as well. Enjoy:
