Rival Schools - United By Fate - mp3 review

March 22nd, 2007 r8e8rcom

I seriously didn’t feel like thinking about new music to send today.  The new RJD2 sucks ass, I was hoping that Charlotte Gainsbourg’s release was going to be good because I kind of had a crush on her after seeing Science Of Sleep, but it sucks.  I’m not really into or excited about anything.  J-A-D-E-D.  I was thinking about randomly picking some shit out of our junk promo box and sending that.  There’s some serious shit in there, you know, the kind of crap that is so bad it actually becomes interesting.  Its amazing to think that people actually spent time to make something so horrible, dated, and cheesy.  You can’t get much worse than a promo by the band ‘Cheese’, titled ‘Enlarge Your Johnson’, with a picture of a cow on the cover.  But no, you guys are gonna get something so much better.  Old school Long Island post hardcore!  You know, I thought all 90s era Long Island kids had an intimate knowledge of hardcore and indie rock until I heard fellow reviewer, Long Islander, who shall remain nameless, tell me that they didn’t know who Braid was and that they sounded like Dashboard Confessional after hearing them.  Hope that doesn’t sound like Im giving them a hard time, there are tons of bands that I never appreciated until well after their demise.  Just seemed like you Long Island kids had some kind of hardcore appreciation class somewhere between PE and Lunch.

Rival Schools were a short-lived Post Hardcore band from New York, formed by members from several influential 80’s and 90’s underground bands (including Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand, CIV, Youth of Today, Burn, Project X, Judge, Moondog, Warzone, Side by Side and Iceburn). The band started from the ashes of a short lived project, World’s Fastest Car which had Artie Shepard of Mind Over Matter and Bad Trip fame involved, but the project went no further than demos. Apparently Walter and Artie had a difference of opinions hence the split. Artie then started Errortype: 11.  These tracks are from their one and only ‘real’ release, ‘United By Fate’.
