We used to review mp3s, but we dont do that anymore.

Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend - mp3 reivew

vampireweekend.jpg  Friends and Colleaques:

Vampire Weekend is an indie rock band from New York City signed to XL
Recordings. They came to public attention via a variety of music blogs,
first on New York’s EAR FARM and then four months later on Stereogum,
leading many to cite them as another example of the “blog band”
phenomenon. The band is influenced by both African popular music and
Western Classical Music. They describe their genre of music as “Upper
West Side Soweto”, performing such songs as “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa,”
which references Congolese soukous music.

The members of the band — Ezra Koenig, Rostam Batmanglij, Chris Tomson,
and Chris Baio — met while attending Columbia University.

  1. More like blaaaaaaa weekend

  2. amen. These guys epitomize POP. I caught them opening for somebody not long ago - definitely catchy, sounds like island/africanese fusion, a tad juvenile and certainly forgettable. Not sure why they get so much press.
‘Squeaky Clean’ comes to mind - zero edge. I’m sure their songs will be used to sell cars, soda and cell phones.

  3. I think that the record isn’t bad per se, but it wouldn’t be my first choice of what to listen to.

They sound like a whimpy Walkmen rip off that sounds like Paul Simon.
Is this the best that “Indie rock” has to offer these days?

Just imagine all the bands that are going to come out of the woodwork sounding like these guys…yawn.

  4. Funny you say “Indie Rock” and put it in quotes cause my first thought was that I was wondering what that term even means anymore anyway… But I guess those were Trevor’s words and not the bands’. This band sounds like stuff I made in high school. “Hey lets make a song that’s sorta like SKA but since we’re like into punk and hardcore we’ll sorta like make it cool or something and stuff”.

  5. nope, those were ‘wikipedia’ words… not mine.

  6. but you wrote the wikipedia entry….

  7. BUST!

  8. indierockpedia.org is available. its all you.

  9. I heard these guys formed on a Carnival cruise ship while their dads were swapping their bahama mommas.

  10. They saw a goth kid with his parents and said, “Wouldn’t it be funny if we had a band called Vampire Weekend?”

  11. Best description yet!

  12. You know, I sent out a couple vampire weekend tracks a few months ago to absolutely no response. And despite everyones obvious disdain for these guys now, those earlier tracks remain the most downloaded tracks on r8e8r right now. So, someones not speaking up and defending their boys. Maybe they read this http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2008/01/vampire_weekend_backlash.html and decided not to stick their necks out.

  13. I do whatever NY Mag tells me.

  14. That’s why you’re DJing their party tonight.

  15. Exactly. I love NY Mag!

  16. Interesting. I hadn’t read that article and that mag somehow even comes to my house ……

It’s not that I have total disdain for them, it’s just that I don’t understand the hype. The band members themselves and their music are sophomoric, vanilla flavored and they sound much like what’s been done ages ago. They are so forgettable that it’s no surprise that you put out tracks by them before which garnered no response.

I’d probably not have ever heard them had they not opened for TNP and I can understand why people would download the tracks if only just to see what the hype is all about. They do, and then they recognize that they’re bored to tears = backlash/poo throwing.

  17. WE’RE FEEDING IT!!!!! EVERYONE STOP!!!! STOP NOWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Mark, YOU’RE FIRED!

  19. yeah, there’s plenty of other crap music we could be talking about, like…

  20. ………like Times New Viking or Rings!

  21. i like turtles.

  22. Natures D students.
